Talk # 1 by Andrew Sutjahjo

During his masters in Neuroscience, Andrew started up an NGO and tried to build an orphanage in Kenya. Two years in, he failed, and vowed to build up his skillset and network to try to do good again once he had more experience. He has since then worked as a data scientist at Capgemini, United Wardrobe, and Utelly, specializing in Search and Recommendation Systems. After seeing how much more impact we can have with data, he switched from building orphanages to building models for good and serves as the chairman of Stichting Correlaid Netherlands, while freelancing on the side.

Title presentation: Predicting wellbeing for at-risk youth through passive phone data.

How can you leverage your skillset to make a positive change to the world? At Correlaid they help NGO’s and Non-profits utilize the power of AI and data through pro bono consulting and data science projects. He will give a high-level overview of the ins and outs of bringing AI to NGO’s and zoom in on the G-Moji project in collaboration with Garage2020, which aims to predict the well being for at risk youth through passive mobile phone data.

Talk # 2 by Paul van der Boor

Paul is a board member of Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Foundation and has helped run some of the DSSG Summer Fellowships in Chicago, Lisbon and London. He is also Senior Director Data Science at Prosus, and holds an BSc in Aerospace Engineering from Delft University and a PhD in Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

Title presentation: Lessons from doing data science with 70+ social good organisations

The mission of Data Science for Social Good Foundation (DSSG) is to foster the use of data science for positive social impact. DSSG does this by training a new generation of data scientists, providing direct support to nonprofits and developing tools that make sure data science and artificial intelligence are forces for good. In this talk he will share some of those experiences and use cases.
