Originates east of Rockville at the junction of the North and East forks and drains southwest into Lake Mead… We started off on a placid stretch of river. Until the day that he fell from the sky.
Mushroom cloud… looks like a drop of water.
From the minds that brought us annihilation of Indians comes a better musket (hitting anything beyond 500 yards was mostly a matter of luck). It is something new, something promising.
Early Spaniards named it El Rio de Sulfureo for the nearby hot sulphur springs.
They didn’t know how hot they were talking about.
Some time ago it was stated that people would see things in the sky, and this is one of those things.
Alamogordo, New Mexico, predawn hours of July 16, 1945.
People have come up with all kinds of ways to touch the sky…
They held it out to us as if presenting a newborn child but the sky does not get any darker than this.
Squirmed around on its big yolk sac. Incoming.
We wait outside like children looking at the sky, like a child on an Easter egg hunt.
The Upshot-Knothole series… 1953… “Dirty Harry’ exposure… enormous amount of debris downwind over southern Utah… sheep deaths… AEC: nothing to worry about… shrugged our shoulders… malnutrition rationale… we were used to accepting whatever the government said during that very nationalistic period…
The animal is actually camouflaged in its habitat, Frozen on the journey between nothing and nothing-
Preyed on its own kind.
Licking away any blood before the evidence can be removed or covered up. Exculpatory. If they knew you, what you are capable of.
Too many stories from the ones in charge have been changed and rearranged. Such theories were made up after the fact.
Mestastasize in text.
Just a game.
Giant pick up sticks.
Over 100 atmospheric bombs were detonated during this time – the majority of fallout landing on communities in southern Utah, including the town of Parowan.
Darker regions extend even farther in all directions and what language a word first came from. Not just single eggs but entire clutches, better crimes.

928 above-and below- ground nuclear bombs have detonated. 867,000 acres. Has that end-of-the-world feel to it. And you’d see rivers of red veins behind the closed eyelid- flash of light from an exploding supernova. Shaded sun. Dark obscured centers more substantial than light.
Holy light, clear light, final light.
What we see as white is the color spectrum dispersed haphazardly anyway.
Light waves have crests and troughs, just like waves on water.
The United States conducted 210 aboveground nuclear weapons tests in the lower 48 states and Pacific Ocean between July 1945 and November 1962. “The earlier, low-yield fission weapons deposited much of their debris in the general area around the test sites, whereas the high-yield thermonuclear weapons tested later produced radioactive fallout on a global scale.”
& I see them beginning to stand & applaud, &.
Then they sang the national anthem.
1814, the national anthem lyrics were composed. At that time, the river was safe: 50 YEARS prior to Nevada’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
Of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth…
Just not in Nevada. Or Utah. Or…
It’s always us that has to pay.
During the 1950s, the mushroom cloud from these tests could be seen for almost 100 miles in either direction, including the city of Las Vegas, where the tests became tourist attractions. Americans headed for Las Vegas to witness the distant mushroom clouds that could be seen from the downtown hotels.
Say it again: There is no place like Vegas.
Seemed to stare down at visitors, in that featureless room.
Hot, choking wind advancing.
The sun blasts something called solar wind at the earth all the time.
This wasn’t it.
Violent, mysterious bright points. Flames reflected on our faces.
Now in a sudden hush- a great silence as vast as the universe that contains everything- everyone pushes forward to touch windows like nothing outside is real yet-
Spectral visitors frequently mark their entrances with a traditional knock. A sound unlike any we have ever heard.
The bomb-shattered glass carried more than just vacation greetings.
(I’ll see your – and raise you a –.)
Another killing, another show.
Smell blood on the wind.
In the 1950s, people who lived in the vicinity of the NTS were encouraged to sit outside and watch the mushroom clouds that were created by explosions. Many were given radiation badges to wear on their clothes, later collected by the Atomic Energy Commission to gather data about radiation levels.
Look south; an eternity of desert.
The edge of earth seems to curve into space.
The veil covering all but the eye.
Every time you cross a railroad track, you get shivers. You get across as fast as you can. Hair on the back of your neck stands up.
The entire Great American Southwest is like that.
In a report by the National Cancer Institute, released in 1997, it was determined that ninety atmospheric tests at the Nevada Test Site deposited high levels of radioactive iodine-131 across a large portion of the contiguous United States, especially in the years 1952, 1953, 1955, and 1957—doses large enough, they determined, to produce 10,000 to 75,000 cases of thyroid cancer.
Add those numbers together.
And quietly and equally suddenly vanish from sight.
Has potential, the AEC would say, as if they were speaking of a gifted child.
Fresh graves were dug for the children each day. Were still forming small hands with their prints still, moments into minutes easing out then gone.
Vegas Valley Leopard frog last seen 1942.
The truth is we’ve always been on our own.
Downwinders called “the silent veterans of the Cold War”. From 1951 to 1962, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission conducted a series of atomic bomb tests at the Yucca Flats, Nevada Test Site. While assuring American citizens tests posed no harm, bombs were detonated only when winds were blowing northeast…
It remains where it landed. (on its own)
Try to pretend it is not there, feel yourself breathing in & out.
But you know it is there.
Got Geiger Counter?
And this is what they said:
“The bomb test planned for today has been postponed until the winds change and blow over southern Utah, southern Utah, where the people are expendable.”
Just when you think it has hit bottom, it goes even lower.
The falling falling fallen bombs.
You may feel that we have been deceived.
Obfuscate the facts.
The unmitigated gall.
The woman in the photograph no longer exists.
The winds are starting to pick up now.
Cancerous red patches spreading.
The root of one tree is good for curing you if you are coughing up blood.
A few surviving palms.
But blood always pools in the direction of gravity. Some people slip & fall to the bottom of the earth where they stay.
Let’s call it what it was: a slaughter.
A simple calculation on the collective dose to the thyroids of the U.S. population that occurred from the release of 131I from nuclear weapons tests carried out in Nevada during the 1950s and 1960s. The collective dose can be estimated in an approximate way by use of the following equation:
which has the solution of
In eqns (1) and (2) the parameters are defined as follows:
C = Units-conversion constant, 390,625 mi-2 m-2 µCi MCi-1;
S = Amount of 131I released by the tests, MCi;
fd = Fraction of the 131I released that is deposited within the continental U.S.;
A = Area of the continental U.S., mi2;
a = Mass-interception fraction for fallout retained on vegetation, m2 kg-1;
MPD = Mass (dry) per day of pasture or green chop consumed by a cow, kg day-1;
fm = Fraction of cow’s intake that is secreted in milk, day L-1;
L = Consumption rate of milk, L day-1; http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=6283&page=194
For most people, the major exposure route was the ingestion of cows’ milk contaminated as the result of iodine-131 deposited on pasture grasses; other exposure routes such as the inhalation of contaminated air and the ingestion of contaminated leafy vegetables, goats’ milk, cottage cheese, and eggs also were considered.
Like usual, they forgot the river. A winding river changed into a snake of brown -black algae, changed into a line we’ve shaken little by little off a map until it gets twisted off the page. Sticks & lists of river things.
A total of 828 nuclear weapons tests were conducted underground and continued until September 23, 1992. Groundwater may travel several hundred miles and be thousands of years old before making its reappearance on the surface.
Strains poised to jump continents.
Liquid water is essential for all known biology.
We spend our first months in a sac of saline solution. We have gill ridges and tail.
The type of milk consumed is important… at that time about 20,000 individuals in the U.S. population consumed goats’ milk. Goats’ milk concentrates iodine-131 more than cows’ milk. Thyroid doses 10 to 20 times greater than those to other residents who drank cows’ milk…
The river beneath the river shows itself.
The total amount of activity deposited up to any given time is the same irrespective of the wind pattern, so the overall casualty figures from fallout will generally be independent of the winds. There will be large amounts of particles of less than 100mm to several millimeters in diameter generated in a surface burst in addition to the very fine particles which contribute to worldwide fallout.
Flying across horizons. The sky: a giant white blood cell.
During World War II, U.S. aircraft tried to shoot down Venus on numerous occasions, believing it to be an enemy aircraft. (The USAF later shot at it during WWII.)
Light being bent by the atmosphere, the thick darkness, like the sky knew a point it refused to tolerate any longer.
Morning Star, Evening Star.
Early astronomers once thought Venus to be two separate bodies.
A changeling, just like us.
The nuclear explosions produce a characteristic mushroom cloud, which moves “downwind” as it reaches its stabilization height. Dispersion of the radioactive elements causes vertical and lateral cloud movement, spreading radioactive materials over adjacent regions. While the large particles settle nearby the site of the detonation, smaller particles and gases may be dispersed around the world. Additionally, some explosions injected radioactive material into the stratosphere, more than 10 kilometers above ground-level, meaning it may float there for years before being subsequently deposited uniformly around the earth. “Global fallout” is the result, which exposes all humans to an elevated level of man-made background radiation.
When you go around the earth in a straight line you will eventually get to the same spot.
Time isn’t a straight line for us anymore.
The crack at the end of the line is widening.
And we need no ghost to come from the grave to tell us that.
Declassified transcripts released from 1978 to 1980 show scientists knew as early as 1947 fission products released by atomic bomb tests could be deadly to humans and animals exposed during and after the tests. The AEC chose to ignore warnings from its own scientists and outside medical researchers and continued with a “nothing-must-stop-the-tests” rationale…
Nellis Air Force Range, Raytheon, tomic Energy Commission (not the Department of Energy): 3 egg yokes. Yolk smooth and blasted yellow.
Safe, poses no threat, we forgot that each word contains the shadow of its opposite. What would fairy tales be without them?
Out of the sweet water.
There was no water for miles upriver or down:
Groundwater in some aquifers on the Nevada Test Site is contaminated by tritium 3000 times in excess of safe drinking water standards.
Whether the ingredients required for life- liquid water, complex molecules, and a source of energy- ever existed together before is a question they can’t answer…
But put blood cells in a salt-free fluid and they burst.
While driving through the Virgin River Gorge, I watched for a place to stop and take an interesting photo. Unfortunately, there are very few places to stop, and many places are signed “No Stopping.” By the time we stopped here, we were nearly through the gorge, and there wasn’t much interesting to see here.
NO STOPPING tests no matter what.
Them standing, back-to-back across the sky, each facing away from each other, each determined to drag you along with them. The first is a question of what happened. The second is a question of how. It’s perverse, really. But it can be stopped, it must be stopped, and it will be stopped.
Because if you do not, god will not hear you.
We didn’t know about it until after it fell. They did. They are demons and they don’t even dispute the fact.
You can’t make the normal singular assumptions you are prone to make.
I keep thinking of where all this goes. The tiniest ravines. Small, sharp flakes lurking in sky. Where it falls as snow.
In the grass like discarded toys. The runoff. Then river to river. And the river beneath the river.
No one will ever know the exact weight of a river, of any river.
Though the thickness of a penny is about one millimeter.
And 15 million bacteria can inhabit a drop of water.
Drifting. Slowly. Downriver.
Have you ever thrown a pebble in a puddle? Rings will flow out from the point of impact… and then they return back to where the pebble landed.
Will continue to be felt on rivers throughout the world.
And it is beyond words:
The ashes of the dead would have been entrusted to the river, but not this river, not now and not again.
Too many other ashes in it.
The Pentagon planned to test a 700-ton ammonium nitrate-and-fuel oil “bunker buster” weapon. The planned “Divine Strake” test would have raised a large mushroom cloud of contaminated dust that could have blown toward population centers such as Las Vegas, Boise, Salt Lake City, and St. George, Utah. This project was canceled in February of 2007, in large part due to political pressure inspired by the threat of downwind exposure to radioactivity.
It’s not nice to needlessly scare people.
The sky can still fall on our heads.
Rare prehistoric pregnant turtle found in Utah: Paleontologists say a 75-million-year-old turtle fossil uncovered in southern Utah has a clutch of eggs inside, making it the first prehistoric pregnant turtle found in the United States.
For those in the future seeking more clues to date the disaster…
Leave it where it is.
From thousands of fleeing footsteps of its victims, preserved in volcanic ash. It had come running from behind them. But the impressive thing about it was that it appeared to come from everywhere.
In the meantime:
