These poems are excerpts from the author’s book project Buena Vista. Told through a collection of flash fiction, short plays, lists, letters and essays, Buena Vista loosely chronicles the author’s journeys through California; his upbringing in Michigan; the freestone magic of Rocky Mountain rivers; meditations on Thoreau, art and the sea—all in a work of autobiographical fiction. Stylistically, Buena Vista’s zeitgeist is driven by Lydia Davis’s simple ars poetica: “You can’t tell everyone the truth all the time, and you certainly can’t tell anyone the whole truth, ever, because it would take too long.” Readers who appreciate Davis’s spare, unpredictable storytelling from Can’t and Won’t, Diane Williams’s Fine, Fine, Fine, Fine, Fine, or Julia Elliott’s The Wilds will enjoy Buena Vista for its stark, surreal and often humorous narratives.

Effort to Repopulate Tiny Bluebirds

- Restoration of tiny grassland ecotones.
- Appearance of tiny bluebirds in their northern range.
- Tiny monogamous courtship patterns.
- Tiny ornithologist to verify speciation . . .

Halfway down a malformed headland.
Two surfers watch seabirds fall onto the cerulean Pacific.
While we eat mussels and complain about the Wi-Fi . . .

- Through voodoo chop, long grass fog, desiccated squall, Manx shearwaters.
- To the rips at Monomoy.
- Where you’ll find an orderly procession of rollers hollowed out by pelagics.
- And the blue latex finger of God . . .
