In the early months of 2017, we were discussing how often writers of formal or experimental poetry in Canada had to go through a man to publish a chapbook of experimental literature. We wanted to provide a space for writers to publish experimental, formal, political, feminist, or genre-blurring poetry that wasn’t governed by a dude.

We do a lot of work behind the scenes, but the writers create the work so they deserve the most credit and profit for it. They are the reason we even have a project to work on in the first place.

I see people constantly clinging to old models of success and status in the poetry world, and it seems archaic to me to step into this programming telling us who is important and what it means to be successful rather than simply creating our own spaces.

We’re influenced by the old school printers and their legacy of radical politics. The three of us love print and everything related to the medium, but we’re also committed to social justice.

We aim to produce fine books of the very best contemporary writing. Each season’s new titles features the cover artwork of a visual artist or illustrator. We strongly encourage women, writers of colour, LGBTQ writers, Indigenous writers, and writers with disabilities to submit.

It’s hard to find a place if you don’t fit into those categories. Part of this is that small press publishing is generally unpaid or underpaid. To ask an already marginalized person to take on that type of unpaid labor is difficult, and it creates this cycle.
