Sxee Finesse offers up a gorgeous, glorious hyperpop trap sound with “Happy Hourz EP”. The many different elements come together through the sheer power of his voice. Within the lyricism itself there is a truly laid-back, chilled-out vibe that adorns the songs even while they hit with a sense of physicality. The high-pitched vocals further lend credence to a surreal mix of G-funk, dub, bubblegum bass, and a whole slew of other styles that effortlessly waft on together. By far though it is his voice that serves as the very centerpiece of the sound, for it spits out verses with ease helping to further lend a sort of disoriented dazed mood into the EP.
Truly in sync with a lot of the music scene right now Sxee Finesse’s work neatly dovetails into PC Music’s overall aesthetic. One can hear the mixture of experimentation with accessibility for they push the sound way out. Melodies melt and the rhythms seem to re-orient themselves on a regular basis. References to A.G. Cook, GFOTY, and others pop throughout. Beyond this, his unique hip-hop style recalls a bit of latter-day MF Doom for the songs have that same sort of playfulness to them, for the layered productions and hazy quality of the sound further adds to the spirit of pure discovery.
Starting things off in style is the rumbling bass of “HAPPY HOUR <3 (prod BeatsByKappa)”. The way they mess with the vocals and pitch feels outright cartoonish, for they hold nothing back. Usage of the beats with a metallic glow in the background further adds to the surprising nature of the work. Pure clouds waft on through with the true shoegaze meets rap nature of “RECORDING! (Prod SAINTIX)”. A dreamy quality unfurls over the track as it heads deeply, deeply into the red.
Chillwave vibes with a retro kick comes through on “CURFEW<3 (prod Eazzyq + kimaurii)”. Blissful to its core, the move towards a more minimal tact helps to highlight the otherworldly quality of the arrangement. Beats have a steady persistent groove on the gigantic “BIG 4” featuring nimble beats from the snares to the handclaps, all of it working perfectly. By far the highlight of the collection comes from the finale “HO! (prod SAINTIX)”. Here they use extended strings and a vast space to allow the song to becomes a fully immersive experience.
“Happy Hourz EP” shows off Sxee Finesse’s fantastic flow with a sense of pure passion and fire.
