#SUMMERSTUFF: A series of lists by Entropy Editors on books, video games, comics, movies, albums, art shows, places, concerts, etc that they are excited about for summer.
This is a list of things that I’m looking forward to, or curious about, or interested in, or excited about this summer:
I. Pallbearer recorded a new album. I don’t know when it’s due out, but I hope that it’s this summer. I’m still kicking myself for missing their show at Eli’s Mile High Club, which is a tiny dingy bar right down the street.
II. Riding bikes. This is all I want to do this summer. Earlier this year my garage was broken into and my bikes were stolen. I’m slowly rebuilding with renters’ insurance money. I’m hoping to get a chance to do some off-road touring or something completely insane like the Tour Divide. Otherwise, I’m looking forward to the descents into the canyons being a little bit warmer.
III. My friend Jared is moving out to the Bay Area for a PHD program. I’m excited to live in the same area as him again.
IV. House shows. Nothing is better than a bunch of sweaty weirdos in a basement listening to aggressively obscure music. Lots of cheap beer and strange vibes. There are plenty of house show venues in the East Bay.
V. East Bay Poetry Summit. This crazy event takes place over the weekend of July fourth. It’s super-institutional and very DIY, and brings together as many disparate poetry scenes and cliques as possible. A bunch of big names in the poetry world are reading, and they’re coming both from here and elsewhere. If you’re in the neighborhood it shouldn’t be missed.
VI. My friend Lisa Fishman has a new book coming out from Wave Books sometime in the future. If it’s this summer that would be great – I’ve got a staple bound copy of some of the poems from the new book and they’re amazing. Speaking of Wave, I’ll probably take advantage of their warehouse sale – so I’m excited about that.
VII. Later this year Persistent Editions will put out a chapbook called Latronic Strag by Sara Deniz Akant this fall and I’m excited to carve out some time to do the design. I’ll also probably be publishing some other things.
VIII. People always seem to visit in the summer. Not sure why this is because it’s nice where I live all the time. In any case, I like hosting people. One of my favorite things to do is to make elaborate dinners for people – my partner and I run a modest underground supper club where we’ll invite 10-15 people to come over and BYOB. We cook dinner and we all eat and drink. It’s good. If you’re around the Bay Area let me know, I’ll cook you dinner. I’m slowly cooking my way through Marcella Hazan’s Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, an invaluable tome that will change anyone’s life for the butterier.
IX. White wine and summer cocktails. Nothing says summer like a giant bottle of Grüner Veltliner or a huge Fernet and Coke – preferably on a beach.
