#SUMMERSTUFF: A series of lists by Entropy Editors on books, video games, comics, movies, albums, art shows, places, concerts, etc that they are excited about for summer.
***
1) Jimmy Giuffre, NEW YORK CONCERTS
One of the more quietly revolutionary figures in the history of improvised music (ok, “jazz,” whatever); we’ve long known that Giuffre was active in the mid-1960’s, but his music from this period has gone, until now, virtually unheard.
2) Sasha Steensen, HOUSE OF DEER
Maybe the second consecutive item on this list awash with the terrible beauty of failed utopianism? (read an excerpt here)
3) Richard Linklater, BOYHOOD
It’s taken the director over a dozen years to fulfill this vision, and that resonates with me.
4) NOT NOTHING: SELECTED WRITINGS BY RAY JOHNSON, 1954-1994
Siglio publishes some of the most beautiful books out there.
5) David Cronenberg, SCANNERS
The ultimate “exploding head movie” on Blu-Ray, and with the full Criterion Collection treatment.
6) CONCENTRATIONS 57: SLAVS AND TATARS.
This exhibition of the underrepresented.
7) OAK CLIFF FILM FESTIVAL
Partially because I’m still not sure what to expect; my wife and I participated in a direct film-making workshop sponsored by last year’s festival and found it to be a rather inspiring experience… so, perhaps I’m excited most by some of the more marginal events on this still-coming-together calendar, http://oakclifffilmfestival.com.
