A sense of defiance runs through the whole of lil ink’s “inkytunes III”. Fiery, passionate flows tie the whole of the album together for his lyricism cascades. Impeccable storytelling focuses upon overcoming the large and small problems that define a life. Depression, relationships, a yearning for something more, all of these are navigated with such ease. Stylistically framed within a hip-hop template, lil ink incorporates elements of punk, thrash, ambient, anthemic rock, and dance into a colossal mix. Volume is an absolute must for there is a sheer physicality to the whole of the album as the tracks virtually burst at the seams. Usage of guitar riffs further adds to the intense spirit.
References abound throughout the entirety of the album for they are merged, combined, and split apart to make completely new creations. Elements of Boards of Canada’s ambient hues appear in fleeting glimpses. The ragged, jagged riffs have a certain degree of fatalism to them, touching upon emotionally laden groups like Deafheaven with their sheer searing sheen. Beyond this he goes further back even, at times bringing some of Portishead’s noir-like trip-hop flavors to further add to the churning rhythms that adorn much of the album.
“the curious art of a Sisyphean task” opens things up with a spirit of grandeur. From static the song gradually comes into view with a luxurious downtempo groove settling down. One of the most optimistic tracks of the album “back then” has a gauzy sheen to it, with hints of shoegaze thrown in for good measure. The whole off the piece simply washes over the listener, with lil ink’s vocals particularly strong as they soar up into the cavernous space. Hyperkinetic to its core “plus one” unfolds and folds into itself as the song captures a giddy bleary energy. A nice edge takes space on the surprisingly limber “acrylics” whose storytelling is particularly sharp. Within the track lil ink explores an intense desire of a moment.
Electro melodies introduce “with GLAMOUR”. Sheer, wild distortion is unleashed. By far the highlight of the album the vocals rush through with urgency. Completely unhinged there is a trashing, feral presence to it. Going for a bit of happiness is the reflective “why we fight”. Loopy, tropical vibes run through the laid-back “down to ride” for the work strips things down to the essentials. Gorgeous riffs bring things to a close on the triumphant “chatterbox”.
lil ink delves into a kaleidoscopic array of color, texture, and tone on the freewheeling chaos of “inkytunes III”.
