Without saying a word, Glenn Murawski’s “Ebb & Flow” tells an entire story. Throughout the whole of this collection Glenn Murawski touches upon a wide swath of stylistic choices, ranging from folk traditions to ambient to classical with even a little bit of rock thrown in for good measure. Highly considerate Glenn Murawski’s careful attention to detail recalls Gastr del Sol’s off-kilter experimental post-rock musings. Quite adventurous at times, Glenn Murawski’s arrangements have a certain degree of giddiness within their very DNA. Beyond the classical, there is almost an IDM component to the work as the patterns have such an intricate sense of geometry. Over the course of the collection Glenn Murawski touches upon Royal Astronomy era Mu-Ziq in how the many different parts effortlessly come together into a unified, emotionally resonant whole.
The hopefulness of these arrangements builds up. Indeed, the entirety of the album opts for a gradual increase in complexity and sheer scale. Rich detail emerges in unexpected ways, a sweep of the strings, a single powerful bit of piano, all of it has a deliberateness to it. Glenn Murawski’s ear for melody plays an important role too for the entire album radiates such warmth. A perfect album with a slight hint of an autumnal reflection everything about it has a gracefulness. Instrumentally lovely these pieces engage in a great deal of interplay making sure it all has a meditative thoughtfulness to it.
A great confidence introduces the collection with “Glimpse of a Dream”. Perfecting a tempo of pure grandeur, the whole of the track has a richness to it. Spry with its interplay of strings “Unsteady Grounds” neatly seems to tap into a spirit of birdsong, as the track has a morning hue about it. Going for a hint of defiance “The Resilient” chooses a delicate and deliberate path. Elements of folk are filtered into “Persistence” where a bit of percussion enters the fray giving it a heightened sense of true tension. Loss permeates the whole of the mournful “The Trial – Reimagined”. Careful ancient guitar strings resonate deeply on the mystical aura of “Winter Theme – Reimagined” which possesses just the right amount of magic. Wordless choirs echo throughout the spacious scope of “Memories Misconstrued – Reimagined”.
For the final stretch of the album Glenn Murawski lets the energy peak, beginning with the aptly named “Rockin’ Out”. Quite celebratory the song lets loose a little bit letting the guitar truly sing as it gradually transformed into rather colossal riffs. Continuing down this path is the hazy dazed take of “Supposed Random Encounter”. Rhythm takes hold on the garage rock infused splendor of “Rise” where a raw grit and soul take hold. Perfectly bringing together the rock and classical components of the sound “Spiritual Grooves” feels just right.
Highly powerful and thought-provoking Glenn Murawski explores an entire sonic universe on the surreal hues of “Ebb & Flow”.
