Claydoh goes deep with soulful grooves on the perfectly sculpted sounds of “Neighborhood”. With an incredible ear for melody the way he filters so many different textures into the singular sound feels masterful. The incorporation of background street noise further adds to the sense of place that Claydoh is creating. By allowing these elements to sort of gently waft into the track the song gains a sense of life and spirit. Keyboards here possess a lovely degree of color for the chords have so much depth behind them. Of course, the true heart of the entire track comes from the gentle presence of the vocals, the way they tell an entire story and do so with such grace.
The low-slung grooves have an impeccable sense of style, going for an artful take on R&B akin to Moses Sumney’s output. Going for that far back crystal cadence, Claydoh takes his time, never rushing anything within the piece. Everything moves at its own distinct pace for the atmosphere is everything, as he brings layer upon layer into the mix. Nods to serpentwithfeet’s style also enters into the fray for, like his work, Claydoh makes sure that every detail is perfectly focused for maximum impact. It is easy to get lost within the dense, swirling rhythms for they have a virtual force of nature quality behind them.
A spacious palette of color is utilized to full effect. The peacefulness of the track feels gives it a quiet grandeur. Melody nicely dovetails alongside the passionate poetry of the lyricism. Rather quickly an entire scene comes to the forefront, one that shows off his storytelling prowess. So much love filters into the sound as the entire thing seems to have been washed in a nostalgic, yearning glow. Detail adds to the tactile quality of the piece, for little gestures are magnified enormously over the course of the track, taking their time as they glide on fully and completely.
Vocals have an intimacy to them, which is further amplified as they have a stripped-down, languid tempo to them. By allowing the many elements room to roam they wash over the listener. When things pick up, they further emphasize the sense of desire, the sense of purpose that slowly comes to the forefront of the narrative. So much color begins to fully bloom for the multi-faceted, multi-layered approach incorporates so much warmth within it, making the entire piece something to get lost in.
“Neighborhood” shows off Claydoh’s impeccable chops in crafting a track that feels like an instant classic.
